First, we again want to thank you for all your help with our adoption of "Yukon." We'll try not to gush too much, but he is a FABULOUS dog.
We have renamed Yukon Sambuca, or Sam for short. He responded to the name right away, and we wonder if his ori
ginal name might have been something close. Continuing reading and see more pics below!
On the way home from Baypath, Sam and Guinness got along fine in the
back of the car. We bought some subs and soda and decided to have a
picnic in a park by the Mystic River. Sam doesn't seem to have much
experience with being on a leash, and pulled mightily most of the way
from the parking lot to the river's edge---about 1/3 mile. When we
got there, we put him on our 25-foot leash, and he was transformed.
He was happy with this much room and contentedly snuffled around
without much pulling.
More surprisingly, he came when we called every time. He also was
always looking over his shoulder at us when the leash was slack, as
if to make sure we were still there. After 1/2 an hour or so, we let
go of the leash and let him explore further. (Note that we still
could grab the leash, and we were a very long way from the nearest
road.) He was great. He went exploring further but s
till kept
checking that we were there and he came when we called. Shortly after
5:00 pm, lots of people started coming by with their dogs. Sam was
happy to say hi, but didn't show any inclination to run after them.
Sam clearly has had some significant training and attention. I can't
imagine why anyone would have wanted to give him up.
He's been completely spoiled since then. We took him on various 4-5
hour walks on Wednesday-Friday. Today is more normal and he is
enjoying a lay day by sleeping most of the time.
We'll see you in a few weeks when we come back to get him chipped.
We will call to confirm times before we come.
We have attached some pictures of Sam on his adventures.
Regards, Fredda, Bill, Sam & Guinness
